Letting go of the clutter

I just have to share how He is leading me to let go of the clutter while I am busy packing. I am moving at the end of May to the town where my children stay to be there for them in the afternoons after school and at His appointed time, Homeschooling 4 Him.

The first thing I want to praise my Husband for, is that He gave me a whole month to pack, so I can go through each room and really sort out everything. I have a throw away bag, a box for “GIVE” and a box for “KEEP”. So far, I’ve given away a lot of things that I have been holding on to for years. Porcelain tea sets that still belonged to my mother, I don’t use them, but I’ve been holding on because in my mind that is a part of my mother that I have with me. But He reminded me the memories are not things, memories are treasures we keep in our hearts and can recall any time we want to. So, I let go of all those tea sets and gave them away.

Another thing He led me to do is to take pictures of my children’s art. All the stacks of school books and shool art that we hang on to. I take pictures of their good artwork and save it in a folder in the cloud.

Since I’ve been on this journey, He gave me the desire to live a simple life, to only have what I need. A house without clutter is light and easy to clean and keep organised, and also makes me feel lighter and happier.

Since last year I have also taught my children to let go, especially toys, because they are getting bigger and they do not play with toys anymore. So, me and my daughter went through all the toy crates in her room and we made a list of what she wants to keep, like her Lego’s and Barbie dolls. Me and my son did the same, he chose to keep his Lego and Hot Wheels, the rest I can “Give” he said. I am teaching them that we cannot hold on to things we do not need, there are children out there who will be blessed by what they give away, and that their Heavenly Father wants them to give so He can bless them. And I am amazed at the number of things they are willingly letting go, good quality branded toys that I thought they would want to keep.

He also blessed me this weekend with a carpet and furniture washer. I wanted to go and rent a machine this weekend to deep clean my loose rugs, coaches and mattresses before I move, but on Friday a pipe burst close to my house so we did not have water, so there would have been no use to go and rent one. I went to visit my aunt during the morning, and I told her I wanted to rent a machine, then she said that she recently bought one for the nursery school to keep the carpets in the classes clean, and that I can borrow it for a few days to deep clean everything I need to! Wow, it saved me almost R700 to rent a machine!

  3. It’s exciting to read your Declutter journey… personally there’s nothing I love more! It’s so freeing and it increases your peace and feeling contentment— what a wonderful gift to give your children.
After being blessed by my Husband with new pajamas I immediately dropped them into my give away bag so it’s ready to give to my friend. One day I felt led to ask my friend if she could drop a bag off to a charity shop when she let me know her new DIL would be thrilled to have what I didn’t need and if she could have them. Yes of course and so now I look for more things to give her and was able to give her a suitcase and garment bag to my friend who didn’t know she’d need it when her FIL was rushed to the hospital then transferred then sent home and God had provided by me not holding onto what my Husband said to let go of.

  4. Thank you Atarah and Isabella, yes I was so blessed to be able to borrow my aunt’s machine and not going out to rent one. It was wonderful to be able to clean couches and rugs that looks clean and gets vacuumed and spot treated regularly, but when you look at the water that came out, it was definitely not clean! I was actually quite amazed and He is leading me to invest in coach covers to protect my coaches and can be thrown in the washing machine. And it is so freeing to let go of things that I’ve been holding on for so long.
